Hello, i am looking to buy a road bike for under 4k. I have a huge dilema. I really like the Decathlon Van Rysel bikes, like the one on the picture. I can get that one for 3.5K. Or i can buy brand new Specialized/Giant/etc. for the same price. Or i can buy a used older model bike like Pinarello Dogma F10 for 2k. Now i feel like buying the Decathlon bike is the most bang for my bucks. Feel like if that bike on the pic was from Specialized, it would be 5k+ . Am i wrong ? And how bad is buying older used bikes like the Dogma F10 ? Even tough its a 6 y.o. model , but 2000€ for Dogma F10 feels like a steal or ? Thanks a lot for help.

  1. There are countless different road bike options, and it can be exhausting looking for different options. Given your budget, I think you should get something new. My general advice to people is the get the best possible bike that fits in your budget. It’s worth it.

The Van Rysel is a great option. If that’s the one you like the most out of everything you’ve seen, then go for it.

  2. You’re getting a ton of bike for the money with that Van Ryssel. Without seeing the spec sheet for the other bikes it’s hard to compare though. The pinarello will probably ride nicer than the VR, I think they have some secret sauce in the carbon

  3. I’ve literally just got the bike 2 days ago, and rode this morning. After a lot of research comparing to a Cube and others, and being warned this would be a lot more aero than the endurance bikes I was also comparing. It is such a good bike! I was like a little kid on it this morning, the Di2’s are unreal. The bike feels sharp, solid and an absolute steal. Go get it

  4. I built up a Specialized Tarmac SL7 frame that I got for a deal myself. Ended up with 2×11 ultegra components that I sourced on the secondary market, except the hope calipers, and all together spent about 2k on everything.

If you’re mechanically inclined you can build one up from used parts and get way more bike for the $. There is something to be said for having a retailer warranty though, so new may be a good option if that’s more your style.

I’m kinda partial to Specialized since I’m a tech at a Specialized shop, but there are so many good options out there. I’d try to ride the models you’re considering and see what feels best to you. Some people want more compliance, some people want aero, some people just want something that looks good. At the end of the day, if you buy the bike you feel like is the best value, but it doesn’t feel great riding it, then you’ll be looking for something else sooner than later.

  5. How much cycling experience do you have? What is your aim with buying a new bicycle? Is it possible that you might decide a different form of exercise is better for you after trying cycling?
