This #SecretPlymouth route will take you along an 18 mile route, to visit a bunch of Plymouth’s Palmerston Forts.
As with all #SecretCity routes, this one is not about any destination. Instead, it’s all about the journey, and along the way, you will see parts of Plymouth that most lifelong residents never knew existed. And if you actually like old forts, well, that’s a bonus, but the ride is not about the forts. They’re simply a good excuse to go for a bike ride.
[Music] Hello again. Today’s Secret Plymouth ride pays a visit to a number of Plymouth’s Palmyon forts. Now, Palmyon forts were built well before World War I to guard against a much anticipated French attack and there are a significant number of them encircling Plymouth. They named after Lord Palmeran who was prime minister at the time and some people also given the derogatory name of Palmerston’s folly because they were never needed in the end. Along the way you will discover some cutthroughs and lanes that even lifelong Plymouth residents probably never knew existed. This ride is not a history lesson. I won’t give you all sorts of dates and figures. And the forts simply give you a good excuse to go for a bike ride and see Plymouth with fresh eyes. Like all my secret city roots, this route is not about any destination. Instead, it’s all about cycling simply to see what there is to see. Just be warned, in a few places, there are some hills that are steeper than what you might like and that go on for longer than you might like. Due to having used too small a memory card for my camera, the video for the first 5 miles was overwritten. That’s a proper school boy error. I decided to simply live with that because there are no forts along those first 5 miles, though it does mean you don’t get to see a hidden cut through. Still, the interactive map for the route available on worldcycle.com shows the entire route and you can download the GBX from there. I spend a long time designing a route like this, cycling the route, then putting a video together. So, please can I ask for something in return? Please, would you like this video and subscribe to my YouTube channel? Also, please will you share it with others to a tiny YouTube channel like mine? It makes a huge difference. Thank you in advance. Now, let’s go explore. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Music] Heat.
