I built this bike 15 years ago with my dad and over the years it’s sort of been fixed/upgraded with whatever was on hand. I recently just started commuting to work and think that I will continue, but would like to make my ride a bit more comfortable. I’m probably gonna switch the handlebars to a road bike setup, and get thicker tires. Any suggestions are welcome. It feels a bit out of control and higher speeds.

The long stem and the setback seatpost seem to suggest the frame may be too small for you. These things could be contributing to the sensation of squirrelly handling. The fix for that though would be getting a different frame, or whole bike.

Other than that, full fenders, lights, and a rack and / or basket is a good thing to have on a commuter. Don’t see any braze-ons on this frame though for them, which could be another reason to seek a second bike for commuting.

Trade it in for a more commuter friendly bike? Hard to imagine there’s much clearance for much wider tires there.
