Stage 21 of the Vuelta a España 2025 was unlike any other.
Jonas Vingegaard celebrated his overall victory in Madrid, crowned king after three weeks of dominance, but the final day was marred by disruption.
Protests on the streets of the Spanish capital forced organizers to cut the stage short by around 50 kilometers, ending the peloton’s traditional procession earlier than planned. The Palestine-Israel demonstrations made it impossible for the race to continue as scheduled.
Despite the interruptions, Vingegaard confirmed his triumph with a third Grand Tour title, while João Almeida and Tom Pidcock joined him in the top 3. However, there were no podium ceremonies.
Reporting live from Madrid, Gregor Brown brings you the scenes from the Spanish capital as the 2025 Vuelta a España ended with both celebration and protests. #Vuelta

Well, we’re right in the middle of it here in Madrid. Unfortunately, the Wasp Spa is not going to finish today. It’s final stage. Police are lined up. Protesters. This would have been the final kilometer where Philips and Alpacas Dunic would have led out for sprint victory. Protest have been relatively calm, but it’s gotten a little bit out of hand at times, and the organization decided to call it off. About 1 hour of racing was cut short around about 50 km. No stage winner for stage 21 of the Vultaspa 2025 with Yonis Vaga still the race leader in the red jersey. Well, that’s a wrap from the 2025 Vultaspa. We were down in the chaos earlier and as I reported from the protest there with the police that this stage 21 has been cancelled. We’ve made it three weeks of racing and I can report Yonasaga is crowned the king of Spain. However, without the closing ceremonies over here that we usually have in the capital of Spain because the team buses have left, the riders have gotten in the team cars and they’re heading to the team hotels. This waltpa has been dominated by two teams with two different approaches. The lassair approach of the Spanish Italian UAE team with the not very good organization that never got around Xiao Ameda. They won seven stages, but they didn’t win the race overall. You let me know what’s the best approach to taking the Baltaspa Visa Lisa bike. They circled all around Yonas Vingaga, twotime Tour to France champion as the police are setting up here behind me. They don’t want the protesters to come up from 500 meters to go to the finish line back over that way. Visma Lisa bike rode all around Yonas Vingagot twice the tour to France champion and wanted to come here to get his second grand tour to France Valta and I think he’s going to go for the Gerard Italia. It was a success. Now, if we’re talking about Matt Person, well, is Brute Force getting the points jersey, the green jersey, getting one stage win along the way, but not the fast speed of Yasper Phillips, who collected three stage wins along the way here to Madrid, where he was hoping to get another stage win. And I should notice Inos Grenaders, another strong team with Bernau, Filipo, Ghana, Ben Turner collecting three-stage wins to add to their two-stage wins at the turn of France with the Rensmen. So though they don’t have the big GC guns anymore, they came here, they made a success in the Baltaspa top three overall. Let’s quickly run down them. I mentioned before the police come up. I mentioned Yonas Fingga race winner. Xiaoa around about 565 one minute back. Tom Pickcock first time ever. The British rider on the podium of the Valta Spa. We should mention fourth overall, Jai Henley and Matthew Ricatello here racing for Israel Premier Tech which was due to a lot of the tension of the race. That’s why the protesters were out. Palestine protesters against Israel’s inclusion in the race. And Matthew Ricatello got the white jersey, fifth place overall on yesterday’s mountain stage. Great ride by him and he beat out of course the ride of Julio Chicone, former white jersey rider. This race unfortunately was marked by protest, but we got here to Madrid and one has to question ourselves. We can see the finish line right here behind us. One has to question why did the organization even bring it here to Madrid when they knew these protests were going to happen, but they insisted and the race couldn’t come through because around about 50 km to go, 1 hour of racing, the race was stopped. Riders packed in. Yonas off to the hotel. Will he ever have a podium ceremony? Remember, he was denied his chance to win the race overall. A couple years ago, Seep Cus got that when Primos Ragglitch and Yonas were seemingly riding against Seep Cous. Se got the victory. One year later, Primos Ragglitch returned with Red Bull. He got the victory and now Yonas gets his two years later. So, those guys, even though they didn’t all get the win back then, now they each have their own Walt Spana victory. As the Valta wraps up here in Madrid at the end of a long three weeks, thank you for joining me. Thank you for indulging me in my runs every morning on Straa and the journey the commamino we’ve had together. Yonas Vingaga, crown king of Spain. Guaspa 2025 victor. [Music]

Should have 10000 police on the route to and into Madrid.
Jonas won fair and square in what should have been Vuelta #2 win had he not been ordered to give Kuss the trophy in 2023.
Sad? Not nearly as 100 mothers grieving 100 children
This is why spain’s la vuelta will always be the least favorite of the three grand tours.
Great job Spain. You elected a 🐈 and these are the consequences. Maybe next election you should elect a real man and get your streets under control.
The only sad thing about this is that a genocidal-washer team is allowed to continue participating in international competitions
They should not even hold the race next year if this is what it’s going to be like. 2 stages with no winner, one modified finish mid race and a cluster ** of a ttt. Worst grand tour I’ve ever seen.
Congrats Jonas! As far as the THUGS…why is Spain allowing this? Why aren't these THUGS being arrested? Shame on Spain for allowing this to happen!
The Spanish government's stance is regrettable. It, in a way, condoned the growing protests and did nothing to stop their organizers. This leaves the country with the blemish of failing to guarantee security and peace for this event, and the sport, which fails to meet its goals, loses the public, sponsors, and those who cover it. Unfortunately, those protesting have no respect for anything; their agendas are political, and they mixed themselves with sport to gain visibility, even though they knew about the widespread live coverage. Right now, they must be drinking, celebrating yet another destroyed event, while on the other side laments the losses and constant threats during these days. Spain is branded as an unsafe place that does not guarantee peace for an event of this magnitude, and that in the future will be an easy stage for new protests. Regrettable.
What a 💩 show….horrible organisation and policing of the event. Should reconsider holding one next year if they can't get the protestors under control …
Happy that Matthew Riccitello from Israel – Premier Tech finished fifth overall and won the best young rider jersey!
Protests are getting out of control.
Fxxx protestors. It's a dang bike race.
Authorities did not do enough to prevent these protestors from destroying the competitor's rights to demonstrate their skills and accomplishments. No reason to not boycott this race next year
Kinda hard to feel afinity for their cause when protestors act thuggish
The beginning of the end of grand tour stage racing and all road racing as we know it.
The stupid protestors! Gosh!
Spain is a joke! I won't be watching next year unless they fix the protests.
He can’t tough Pogacar.
Shameful to allow protesters to disrupt a Grand Tour event. It's unsafe for the riders and does nothing to advance whatever cause you (wrongly, IMHO) promote. Let's see these protesters try these antics at a WWE event and see what happens.
Protesters should be ashamed. Interfering with these athletes goals and dreams. They have nothing to do with the trouble in the Middle East.
Outstanding Ride Jonas Bravo 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
Protesters don't love the world cycling 😂😂😂 what a character!
What an embarrassment for Spain..
