So I have a 2yr old and 5yr old that sometimes get along and other times act like typical siblings. This is why I can’t reliably use a two child trailer since fights can (and have) happened.

The 5yr old loves to bike and “help daddy pedal” while the 2yr loves to lay out with gut out pretending to be royalty.

This works for us BUT my wife thinks this is unsafe. Both children wear helmets, there’s always a fan inside the back trailer (it gets hot down south) and buckles are in place. I only go on paved bike trails and I always get off my bike and walk them across any street.

Can someone point out legitimate safety concerns that maybe I am not aware of? I haven’t had a problem and plan to continue but I figured I’d poll the internet because… why not?

  1. Only thing that I personally dislike is the point of attachment for those trailer bikes being so high. It really adds a bunch of wiggle but you get used to it. Just don’t go fast.

I’ve seen families tour across countries on this exact setup so I don’t think theres too much to worry about

My only question would be if the attachment for bike #2 at the seat post is designed to handle the weight of the 5 year old + attached trailer + 2 year old

  3. Just the amount of weight and distance to stop could be a concern in an emergency, but as long as speed is limited I struggle to imagine a situation where something would happen. Just make sure brakes are top condition and hydraulic pref

  4. I gotta wonder if braking will actually be effective on the trailer with the double linkage. I would think under a crash or hard braking that thing would swing like mad. You’re also incredibly long. Steering this unit must be so sluggish.
I would personally shorten this up somehow just for pure manueveurability. With a Mac ride or sit on bike seat for your two year old. The trail a bike is quite alright on its own.

  5. The safety would depend a lot on your location (biking infrastructure) and distance you pull them through.

Honestly? I’m not a fan. I’m sure it works, but I would not be comfortable with it. From the picture, it seems that breaking in an emergency would be a challenge.

Just hook the trailer to mom’s bike. Problem solved. Doesn’t really make sense that you’re pulling both kids like that while she rides free on her own in the first place
