A few months ago I bought a Trek Checkpoint with hydraulic brakes.… loving the bike!… however the brake pads take a long time to contact the rotor, or the lever engagement feels very long. The lever has to travel quite far before the brake starts engaging.
Is there a way to adjust this? The bike is pretty new, only a few months, so I hope I don’t have to bleed the system to fix this.
I was thinking of buying this tool: https://crest-tool.com.
Anyone has experience with it? Or with this issue?
Thank you!

that tool is not what you need. what you are talking about is called ‘dead stroke’ (shimano calls it free stroke).
some brakes let you adjust this, on others its fixed. people have all sorts of hacks to change the feel;.
research dead stroke and lever throw adjustments.
long dead stroke gives you more pad clearance which means less pad rubbing. its a tradeoff.
