So I’m debating on getting a Wing Freedom X E-bike from a cyclist on marketplace. She’s selling it for $775 and it goes for $1300 new. I have a foot injury I’ll be recovering from for the rest of my life so wanting to find ways to stay active and e-bike seems like a safe option to move without being on my foot too much. I’ve never gotten an e-bike before so I have no idea what I’m doing but this seems like a good deal. She won the bike in a raffle and wants to donate money to cancer research (what she’s told me) and seems great. Is this a reasonable price for a newbie who will be riding some woodsy trails (nothing too intense)????

  1. As a disabled individual with two partially amputated feet and recovering from injury I can tell you that an ebike is a great way of moving around without putting too much pressure on your feet. However it is not a safe alternative to walking. People who are not used to bicycling finding themselves going 20 or 25 miles an hour in traffic are facing significant risk because of lack of experience. I use my bike daily and find it actually allows me to experience the world in a way that I could not do because of my injuries. Using the bike has never exacerbated the injuries and puts very limited pressure on the foot, at least the part that was injured. However I strongly recommend that you get a mid-drive ebike not a hub motor. I would spend a little bit more money and get a better quality bike.

  2. I imagine its _fine_. Obviously there are better bikes, but this could be a good starter.

Definitely take it for a test ride. Search online for any common issues with these specific bikes, then check for those issues if they exist before you buy.

As others mention, mid* drive is generally better. But if you’re doing simple rides around town or parks then this would be fine.

Alternatively, if your local bike shop has options, and you can afford those, then consider buying from them. They will usually give you peace of mind with warranty + willingness to repair/maintain the bike in the future. FWIW

It looks like a van moof rip-of… If the design is somehow copied the quality of the build cannot be better. For that pricepoint I think you cannot expect a reliable build, that can be maintained well in the future.
