Have you ever wondered just how accurate your Garmin is at predicting your V2 max? Well, you’re going to find out because this weekend I headed to the lab to test it against the real thing. The test was quite simple. It was balls to the wall and make sure you ride until exhaustion. The spanner in the works though is it’s not just ride as hard as you can until exhaustion. What happens is the power gets harder every minute. When you really are dead at the end, then you’ll get a whole bunch of numbers which equate to your V2 max. Well, it turns out that my Garmin was absolutely bang on. The Garmin SE 60 was matched exactly by the cycling V2 max test in the lab. So, do you know what? Big up Garmin.

Garmin puts me at 44 for running and 42 for cycling, which they say is in the top 30% for my age and gender.
This is anecdotal. Have broader studies been done?
Which Garmin version is that one?
Cool now I can be clinically proven to be inferior 😆
And here I am: Garmin VO2max of 53 and a real one of 47 and running marathons around 4hr
Compared to other people in the comments I feel like a potato.
VO2max is not relevant when doing endurance
Me stuck at 48… cannot wait to see 60 one day
The internet is filled with folks with "VO2 Max" anxiety. They can't process the Garmin data and reasoning behind it.
Which watch is that
I think Garmin VO2 max is pretty accurate if your primary exercise is cycling or running. The Garmin doesn’t track heart rate very accurately for certain exercises. I do burpees and the Garmin typically low balls my heart rate during my burpee workouts. It shows that I need more high aerobic and anaerobic training but it doesn’t accurately measure me when I am actually in those zones. The fitter I am getting the lower my VO2 max goes. My resting heart rate has dropped from 60 to 50, my hrv has gone up about 15 points but my VO2 max went from 41 to 39. Maybe I need to do a threshold run to calibrate my vO2 max better.
Kind of Garmin do you have ?
What model is this?
Hey! What garmin is this?
My v02 max is at 52 right now on my garmin. Realistically, what would i need to do per week(s) to increase it to 60??? I run ans cycle, for triathlon
Awesome video. 🙏
I have many doubts about my VO2max value, my Garmin tells me 60, I'm 50 years old and smoke 10 cigarettes a day, and I only cycle 10,000 km a year, i want believe in your test!!!
Which Garmin is this?
My Google watch says 71 but actual lab was 77. Age 16
Thank you for this confirmation :)))
Garmin Venu3: 47 / Lab 47. Male over 50
In the time it took him to post the short, the Garmin knocked 2 points off his VO2 max and flagged his training status as Unproductive.
My Garmin VO2max goes down each week when I do several long runs at altitude.
Always goes up when I travel to the coast.
Looking forward to seeing it shoot up by 4 points as soon as I go for my first easy run in Singapore 🤔
I love guys comments here. Sprints, obesity, cigarettes. Athletes willing to have higher Vo2max. Not fit people claiming they doubt their Vo2max is actually high.
Girl here, with severe periods (intensive bleeding for a week, fyi). I don't drink, don't smoke, work out all my life, 40+. After periods Vo2max drops by 3-5points, after a steak (meat) Vo2max spikes. After iron infusion Vo2max spikes like crazy.
Even if you are not fit but your iron/ferrum/hemoglobin/ level is high you will still have high Vo2max even if not fit. Cause it's those red blood cells delivering oxygen to your muscles, organs. #askawoman
It’s an average value. Even if it is 10% higher or lower than your VO2 Max it is kind of accurate by the definition of Garmin.
The VO2 max estimate is dependent on other variables – so it depends on factors like how you have determined your max HR. If you just trust Garmin's algorithmically determined max HR or you just use a formula – your VO2 max estimate is essentially an estimate based on an estimate. If you go run hill repeats until you find your max HR and set it (and turn off auto "detection" for max HR) – your VO2 max estimate will be more accurate.
Es ist ungenau hast du einen schlechten tag sinkt sie… Und am guten tag steigt sie nicht wieder.
I didn’t do any test but my garmin said my vo2 max is 66 which should be good but I don’t consider myself super athletic even if I train every day
My forerunner 45 was saying 56 and then I got it tested in the lab at 72 so ig it depends what kind of garmin you have
w mines 68 😘 (according to garmin)
To obtain 'Cycling' VO2max in the video, you need a power meter besides the watch, Do you have a access to a power meter when you cycle regularly?
60 is very good!
I've done the same, and they exactly matched (56 before I got serious at running, and 65 in peak fitness just before I got Long Covid). I think perhaps when it differs is if people don't do what the watch expects. As a runner, I trained in a classical and predictable way, so the watch knew exactly what my VO2 Max was.
Why is my vo2 max dropping even though I train more intensely 😢
Which Garmin is it you are wearing in this video?
Garmin really nailed this one!✌️
Seen so many times its not even close.
I'm 65 my Garmin says 56, was 63 when I was fitter so that would put me at elite level for my age. I'm ok but not elite level.
Which Garmin is this?
Not for me. My Garmin says 46, and my test in the hospital said 26,6???
Is that the 965? I have that one, so its pretty accurate then or is it also from person to person mine sais 68 but I don’t want to do a test bcs I know I am going to be dissapointed of its below 75
what garmin u use
Mine can’t be accurate (not cycling). Mine says it’s 59 and I’ve been running for a year. My 5k pb is 21:54. How can I possibly have a superior VO2 max? Yeah I’m fit, but I’m not THAT fit.
So, this is one case study where it happened to match. .how accurate is it on average for 100-1000 people of different stages in their fitness?
Which model is this Garmin?
