Drivetrain is a bit rough but there’s some great parts on there. King headset alone is worth $200 odd. 900 is reasonable but expect cassette chain front chainring to need replacing at some point

I think $900 is a very reasonable asking price and maybe even cheaper with some negotiation. Somas are cool and this was a super high end build at the time it was new. Keep in mind chris king headsets are $180+ new and fox factory forks are $800+ new on their own. Sure this is all secondhand with miles but this is still a thoughtfully put together machine that you would be getting for a fraction of the original cost. Definitely shreds better than any brand new $900 bike and has more clout.

If that was in my size I’d buy it. Expect to replace the cassette and chain and service the fork, but it’ll be a solid bike that’ll last years with a bit of maintenance.

casset looks done for sure, and most likely, the crank and chain also. You can buy a new hard tail, aluminum frame for the $900+ with $500 in repairs on that bike and save a few lbs along the way. Rocky Mountain growler 40, $1439 new, full warranty . It looks like someone else’s headache to me.

Nice fork and frame, but the rest of the components look rough. Chain is rusted and the drivetrain is beat to hell. No chance this thing rides without creaking, groaning, and grinding through shifts.

I’d say it is fair. Drivetrain will need some help sometime soon, but everything else is solid. It’s not a big name brand frame, which is probably why he had to mark it down. They’re quality steel frames, though.

Depends on what you are looking for…. Are you shopping specifically for a hardtail? or this specific Soma steel frame?
Or are you shopping for any MTB in general, and just trying to stay under $1K budget ?
My thought is… if you’re an experienced rider, and know you want a steel hardtail, this bike looks pretty nice for the price– good forks, great headset.
But if you’re just looking for any good used MTB priced under $1K… you could probably find a decent used full suspension bike with aluminum frame in the same price range. Might not have as nice of a fork, or headset, but having rear suspension makes a huge difference
