I haven’t had the opportunity to run into ring wear on a fork yet.
I was working on this bike with a loose headset and I decided to dig deeper to see if there was evidence of it being loose for a while and I see this.
This looks to me like a worn patch from the compression race, but I don’t have any experience with wear on carbon forks. It measures about 0.12mm smaller than the steer tube OD.
What do you all think? Still safe? Any help is appreciated.

Dead bearing resulting in the compression ring rotating against the steerer. I wouldn’t reinstall it, but you can send it off to get it repaired (basically sanding and adding extra layers of carbon).
Imo I’d buy a new fork.
Thanks! That’s what I was thinking too
Is that like a carbon sleeve over a metal steerer? Pic 4
Yes, that’s textbook ring of death. That fork should not be ridden in that state.
