Dylan Groenewegen has given an emotional interview and apologised for the part he played in Wednesday’s crash near the finish line of the first stage of the Tour of Poland.
Fabio Jakobsen, who races for Deceuninck Quick-Step, was sprinting to the line with fellow Dutchman Groenewegen when the latter deviated from his line and sent Jakobsen crashing through roadside barriers.
Jakobsen suffered injuries to his eye socket and jaw, prompting doctors to operate on him for five hours on Wednesday.
The 23-year-old emerged on Friday from an induced coma.

False tears.
He should have been banned for life.
Pushing your competitor into the barriers with this speed is murderous.
Psykopath with fake tears. He should go to jail and never ride a bike again.
He should be banned forever
Dudes psychotic.. he intentionally leaned in with his shoulders and elbow. Hopefully his soul will be spared.
Garbage human being.
fuk you!! you need to be in hell for an eternity
Cheater!
Hell yes, anyone would be sorry to be part of such a crash. But what most of you commenters-most of whom seem to know nothing of cycling-don't realize is that Fabio is solely to blame for this crash. It was only the 'spectacle' and not the injuries that brought about so much media attention. If Fabio just slides on pavement for a block, nobody says anything. The main thing is, Fabio was trying to do something he should not have been trying to do. Youth and inexperience led him to attempt to squeeze in there. He put himself squarely into that position. But, the way the world works, you've always got to have someone to blame.
Ban for life. Groenewegen hasn't got the character needed to be a good, even-tempered cyclist. He couldn't stand an opponent taking the win from him but that's exactly what competitive sports is all about – the race ends at the finish line.
Ive always thought the leaning was always intentional until I found myself doing trying to stay up when myself and another were too close. I ended up crashing and all the veering was me trying maintain balance and stay upright.
Former lawyer here. Only a 9 month ban?! WTF? Should be aggravated assault (or even attempted manslaughter) charges brought against Groenewegen.
Agree also they need to up their barrier game
F U Dylan
Why is this motherfucker still competing? He should be jailed and banned for life
Hij zette zich af tegen Fabio als je de beelden kijkt. Ik hoop dat hij vergeving heeft gevraagd en echt spijt heeft betuigd. Dat is heel belangrijk.
not forgiven, fuck him
That was not a “mistake.” It was intentional and bad judgement. He should be banned from all racing for life…as he nearly took one…intentionally. I believe he didn’t think it would be that bad. Regardless…
He cries now
Sniffle sniffle.. punk should be banned for like
I’m sure he is sorry now. But he seems like the kind of psycho that would do anything in the moment to win, and will do it again since he got away with it.
Accidents happen, unlucky
People are soft as fuck in these comments . Heat of the moment reaction , happens all the time with alot less injuries.
To heck with this guy. We all saw the elbows. He hurt the official seriously, as well. Should be banned for life.
The whole incident was not at the speed of light.
I cant accept his excuse that everything happened in a split second.
The fall may have happened in a split second!
But the diviation from his line towards his fellow cyclist was a premeditated, calculated, conscious decision that he made and executed!
He simply dint want to lose.
And he got a man almost killed! The only reason the other guy didnt die was purely LUCK!
I am not one to condemn people very easily. But in this case, to force another cyclist to fall, at 80km/h, just so you win, is not only unacceptable, but also downright criminal!
If i was Fabio, i would sue him to hell and back.
Not for the money, but at least to get him off the sport!
This dude is psychotic!
That mf should be jailed for at least 3 years and life banned from competition
This guy is disgusting. 9 months of suspension is a joke.
Le debieron de revocar su licencia para competir, q mal deportista ,😮
sorry voor mijn fout ze moeten je opsluiten en nooit meer los laten
I have never watched a full cycling event, but you can’t tell me he didn’t push the guy into the barrier. I’ve seen slow mo replays, and his arm literally pushes off more than once. Crocodile tears. You tried to kill a guy.
Really learnt from your mistakes, 4 years later and you tried to do the exact same to Sam Welsford at Tour de Hongrie 2024 Stage 2.
Cunt.
Groenewegen tried it again recently
Complete tool
Missed almost every opportunity to really make up for his fault in a sincere and decent way. Almost as incredible as his savage move leading into the crash. Not a great personality even though he never wanted to damage Fabio the way he did of course.
crocodile tears 🤮
Theirs's a difference between a mistake and regretting doing something. Mistakes are unintentional.
Just seeing this. He never could have imagined something like this happening?!?! It’s why there’s a fucking rule against changing your track. It’s not just to make the sprint fair, it’s to make it SAFE.
