[Music] in the last episode we left Gloucester docks and we’re now on the Gloucester and sharpness Canal heading south towards sharpness in this episode we’ll be cruising to Frampton on 7 and stopping to explore this lovely [Music] Village the gluster and sharpness Canal was once the broadest and deepest in the world even today it stands out from other navigations because of it sheer scale and impressive [Music] engineering that’s it green light we can go it’s immense swing Bridges and ornate Bridge Keepers houses add to its unique identity all the bridges are manned and operate a traffic light system red when it’s closed flashing red when it’s being prepared to open and then the green green light telling you that you’re free to pass [Music] through it connects Gloucester to sharpness allowing boats to bypass a treacherous stretch of the river 7 as you’ll see later the views across the 7 estri from the canal are just superb [Music] this is nether swingbridge it was the final part of the a430 Gloucester Southwest bypass and was designed with a clearance of 4.7 M so they would only have to open for larger boats so it minimizes the disruption to the traffic on the [Music] bypass as we travel down the canal you’ll see there’s so many different styles and sizes and shapes of boats but still lots of narrow boats so we didn’t feel out of place it really felt like River cruising but with the added benefit of being able to Mo up in many more places like on [Music] canals this is Sims Bridge it’s another high level Bridge which smaller boats can pass under the name comes from the former Sims farm that once Stood Beside the road [Music] Ria bridge is also high enough for small boats to pass under without being opened this is the classical style Bridgeman’s house [Music] [Music] the bridges help us keep a check on our progress on the map [Music] [Music] The Gatekeepers radio ahead to the next gates to let them know a boat’s coming so they’re often already already prepared when we got there so we could just pass through without stopping [Music] [Music] looks like we’ve got a cruiser coming let move [Music] [Applause] over the canal opened in 1826 7 taking craft of 600 tons with maximum dimensions of 190 ft long and 29 ft [Music] wide it was so easy to turn around our 60t boat wherever we wanted without having to find a winding hole like on the narrow canals [Music] you can see another of the classical star Bridgeman’s houses at parkbridge sharpness docks and the canal continued to be busy through to the 1960s an important new cargo being oil and petroleum however as had always been the case Imports considerably exceeded exports sharpness stocks are still active though there is now little commercial traffic on the canal itself and it’s mostly Leisure craft that you’ll see these days we were really excited to see narrow Bluebell on the right just here this was the boat that we saw online when we were trying to choose a color for our own boat and with just 24 hours to make a final choice we decided to go with it and I’ve never regretted our quick Choice thankfully [Music] yesterday there was sun and there was rain Beauty in the mountain and as the light startled our eyes we let go of [Music] Disguise and now there’s something in the air and a sparkly Shimmer on our skin storing everything within oh dreamy Breezy we go easy easy on our tiptoes under cover agents of the other Beyond gravel beyond [Music] all hand in hand building castles out of sand reaching for the ground Willow Line we lose track of time that up high now we climb oh dreamy Breezy we go easy easy on our tiptoes under cover agents of the other Beyond gravel Beyond [Music] no a bigger scale the world than inh as we [Music] go I wouldn’t want it any other way [Music] no dreamy Breezy we go easy easy on our tiptoes under cover agents of the other Beyond gravel Beyond dreamy Breezy we go easy easy on our tiptoes undercover agents of the other Beyond gravel Beyond [Music] [Music] the boat ahead on the left must be the most unusual boat that we’ve seen on our travels so far [Music] [Music] as we pass through Splat Bridge we started looking for somewhere to more for the night [Music] and with the beautiful views across the seven estri that we’ve been promised we found a space to call home for the next couple of days close to Frampton on [Music] seven e [Music] with a lovely sunny day but still no let up in the crazy wind we went to explore [Music] boy that’s a good thing a VI [Music] this is the lovely named Splat Bridge it’s not name isn’t it [Music] we’re coming in at the bottom end of the village this is called church end did you say church end yeah cuz this is the end the church is I think we got quite a walk through the village it’s long it’s a long spread out Village [Music] s for [Music] okay [Music] [Music] [Music] oh oh [Music] oh [Music] oh oh oh [Music] so this is some of the green that’s the longest Green in the country apparently the longest Village Green [Music] [Music] want some water boy we’ll put you in the backpack a good old walk haven’t you boy right don’t we knocking this over okay wait wait a minute looking at it a bit confused hang on boy wait a minute wait wait there we go there you go boy come now look she always dark when you’re getting into the backpack it’s quite funny you happy boy [Music] pop is just see squ where’s it gone pop this looks like be the main part of the Village Green oh and look there’s a pub Pete there’s a pub open out the pub of course it’s Saturday afternoon so this is the little village Shop with a post office here as well the green [Music] shop this this is the swim bridge that we came under yesterday FR [Music] Bridge don’t go too far pop [Music] not much further boy [Music] [Laughter] [Music] boy [Music] join us next time as we continue our journey onto the very end of the gluster and sharpness Canal to sharpness docks thank you so much to everybody The pirate ship was originally built to be a cafe boat in Gloucester, but that never happened for one reason or another. It's been moored at Saul for years & used to have cannons & pirates on it. We used to moor between it & the Stables cafe & quite often used to get people with children going past to look for the pirates. I believe it was bought about three years ago by someone who removed the pirates & cannons to use it as a pla e to escape to at weekends!
Aww little Hamish in his backpack..adorable xx
Enjoy the music supporting your wonderful vlog. Wish there was a specific tract of it.
Saturday morning, breakfast, freshly brewed coffee and a relaxing cruise down the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. It's a lovely way to start the weekend. Frampton on Severn looks gorgeous, doesn't it? I don't have a Nicholson Guide for that area so I am following you on the Open Canal Maps app on my phone. Thanks for another fascinating journey. Cheers.
20:10 totally agree with that boat! 👍👍👍 Had to ask the German AI lady to leave again – it seems now to be standard here.
Danke! And Merry Christmas! I mean Frohe Weihnachten! 🌠🌠🌠
Just fabulous!
Thanks for the video 😃
I just found your channel a few weeks ago! I am so enjoying traveling along with you by way of videos. Such beauty to see in your part of the World. I’m from the United States. You may have told on an older blog I haven’t seen yet, but I’m curious how you came by the names for your sweet little doggies! I have never heard the name Hamish before. He is adorable in his little backpack! Was it difficult getting them used to traveling aboard the boat! They seem to enjoy it! They are so cute that I want to reach through the computer screen and pet them! Wishing you safe & warm travels!
Delightful! So enjoy you giving information as to what you are viewing and the history!Love the way you love your precious pups.💓

Thanks
That view from the canals over to the River Severn is indeed spectacular. That swing bridge under the A430 seemed huge. I love seeing when Pete packs up Hamish… and Poppy continues lickety split. Ve well and merry Christmas!
THE MARITIME WORLD HAS CHANGED SINCE THE VINDICATERIX WAS SCRAPPED AT SHARPNESS & THE OLD SEA SCHOOLIN GRAVESEND WAS SHUT DOWN. I SPENT SOME TIMIE IN THE OLD SCHOOL THEN TRAINED AT THE NEW DENTON FACILLITY. THREE YEARS LATER THE CONTAINER SHIPS ARRIVED WHICH BROUGHT AN END TO AN OLD WAY OF TRADING
Lovely little tour. Thank you for sharing.
