What terrain are tyres with this sort of tread suited for? They don’t feel very grippy off road and seems to give alot of rolling resistance on paved roads

Usually see these on “Beach cruisers” so I’m thinking beaches.

I’ve got the same set that u got off a used bike. Put them on an old rock hopper. Actually rode a bit on and off road they’re pretty durable, but absolutely horrid for comfort

They’re good enough on both, and look good on the shop floor.

They’re basically an all-rounder tread, but the design is many decades old, and they’re made more to be affordable than high performing. They have high rolling resistance because they’re relatively thick and stiff.

looking to get some knobby tyres for it, unfortunately its an old 26er with 2×2.1 tyres, are there any reputable companies still making 26er tyres?

I have only seen those on really crappy beach cruisers.
That being said I can’t remember ever seeing any that were so new they still had whiskers on them.
And yep, there are lots of good 26ers in the 2″ range. Just be prepared for sticker shock. Something basic but durable like Scwalbe Marathons are something like 60-80 each. Nicer offroad tires like Rene Herse or Schwalbe Billy Bonkers are generally more than that.
About the only tires you can get below 50ish that aren’t garbage are Kendas and even those can be dodgy and not very durable.

panaracer still makes the dart/smoke combo which can be had for 100$
