To clarify, it’s that black metal piece attached to the frame. We bought the bike used so wanted to know if it’s something the previous owners might miss or wish to have back. We could ask them as well, but didn’t want to bother them unnecessarily.

It looks like it’s to protect the derailleur if the bike is put down or dropped on that side

Never seen anything like this, but it could very well be a rear derailleur guard to prevent damage during a crash or if the bike tips over.

Just a derailleur guard. Handy for the Kid Yeet dismount method.

Its to guard the derailleur. Your derailleur hanger is fixed to the frame (other bikes are removable and replaceable) if the bike falls on that side and causes the fixed hanger to bend its most likely gone or at the lest very hard to bend back. So this protects from impact.

It’s for when the chain falls off from high gear (rear derailers can cause this to happen to any bike), the plastic disc keeps the chain from hitting the spokes. aka dork disc

Derailleur guard so when she just drops it on the ground like all kids to, it’s protected.

I’ve had one on my GT sine 1996

Kids are notorious for just dropping their bike. This is a guard.
