I eventually want to ride it, it's a 1988 Trek 1000. Thing is the only thing I really know how to do on my own bike is replace the tubes. I fix my own cars so I feel like I have the ability and I feel like this is a good time to learn bikes… I just don't know where to start I guess…

You’ll need the specific tools to remove this kind of bottom bracket. Once you’ve got them, you’ll be able to remove the old bottom bracket. If it’s a BSA threaded bottom bracket (which it probably is, that’s by far the most common standard) then you’ll be spoiled for choice for either square taper or external bottom brackets (though you’ll need other specific tools to install whichever one you choose).
Either take it to a bike shop that has the proper tools or use a bench vise for the drive side and cold chisel or pipe wrench to loosen the lockring on the non-drive side. All threads loosen in the direction that the cranks turn when riding. Then use plenty of grease or anti seize with the install of the cartridge. Touch up any bare steel with clear nail polish after the cartridge repair.
May I introduce you to the patron saint of old bicycle knowledge?

Unscrew the old bottom bracket (the correct way), measure it and order a new cartridge one the correct size. Bikes are simple machines, if you fix cars you can fix bikes with a little research.
You need to know:
– the threading of the BB shell
(most likely it’s BSA, which is good
– the spindle length of the current spindle
– the type of square taper
odds are it’s JIS, but you need to be sure, if you want to keep using your current crank
– you need a hook tool, pin spanner, and fixed cup spanner to remove the BB you have now
– you’ll need a Shimano cartridge BB tool to install the new one (most cartridges use this standard now, even if they’re not Shimano, nonetheless double check to make sure)
Tools are the first step to this job. Get the proper tools and learn how to work on your bike. Can you do the work without the proper tools? Sure, but you are more than likely to end up frustrated with damaged bicycle parts and damaged knuckles.

Keep in mind, there are multiple different threads. So make sure you order the right BB for your frame.
