Mathieu van der Poel and teammate Jonas Rickaert attacked at the start of the 174.1-kilometer Stage 9 of the Tour de France 2025 and came within a few hundred meters of a wire-to-wire victory. They led for more than 170km but were swallowed into the peloton just before Tim Merlier edged Jonathan Milan in an exciting sprint finish. #TDF

Got two riders immediately onto the attack. One of them being Matthew Vanderul. 176 riders at the race start. He’s in full mode, isn’t he? Look at the way he’s riding already at the beginning of this stage. He’s full out. What an incredible day out. And still Vanderpool looks and focuses and grimaces a little bit. Now Vanderpool says, “Right, now’s time to win the stage.” Vanderpool goes clear. 6K to go. He’s been in the lead now for 172 km. Vanderpool grimaces a little bit more. Can he find some more speed? Oh, with 1 km to go, Matthew Vanderpool is going to be caught. 173 km in the lead for Matthew Vanderpool. How to light up the tour to France. 173 km.
