I bike in Finland is a short documentary that shows the interesting experience that exchange students have in Finland and how this biking experience is different from theirs home country. The film presents five different students from across the globe that describe the experiences from the moment of their first bicycle till the actual moment when they are in Finland.

Each of the story’s are unique but still have in common a lot of elements related to the biking experience, mostly their experience in Finland.

I bike in Finland was my first documentary and I can tell you for sure that during the production of it and after the film was ready I learned a lot of things about how to realize a documentary for example how to put the questions so i can have a fluent speech after the material is put together or that using different equipment for different purposes like a Sony Z1 camera for following shots of bicycles on the street or faster moving objects because it’s easy capability to keep the objects in focus, the GoProHero 2 for the shots from the bicycle and for the interviews I used a Canon 5D II DSLR for the quality of the image and the option that gives by having a shallow depth of field.

For the sound I decided to use shotgun microphone on top of the DSLR and a pre-amplifier to have a better control over the audio by being able to connect to it headphones.

The film was edited in Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 and the new feature called stabilization was very handy especially for the shots from the city that were a bit shaky cause they were shot hand held. I decided to add a black and white filter to some parts of the film to slightly induce to the spectator flashback feeling.

I bike in Finland was realized during my Erasmus exchange program in Oulu at OUAS School of media and I want to thank Heikki Timonen for all his help and support that he had put in to make my exchange experience an unforgettable one .

[Music] hi I’m zi I’m studying media at the school of music dance and media and I’m from Germany I like biking so everybody said um was looking for bikes and I actually always use bikes because I saw Alo is not such a big city so I can reach everything with bike so I just wanted to have a bike I have to say in Germany biking is very famous and would say it’s like quite the same so old was very friendly to bicycling okay I’m Thomas and I come from France and study in business engineering school I think the first bike I just rode it was a tricycle it was my grandmother just offered me for a Christmas gift and it was the first one and after when I real began to to ride with a real bike it was with um two other guiding wheels and it was with my father and uh when he just ped off this kind of uh wheels just beginning fall and I was crying and uh he told me okay stand up guy is you are a man begin to to write like a male and it was the first yeah writing with my father I was maybe six or something like that hello my name is paa I’m exchange student here in the Olo University of applied science I’m from Spain I think the first time I had a bike it was like 4 years old and it was a tricycle it was so sweet and small my first real bike was when I was almost eight something like that because I’m not so used to bike in Spain here I think you’re really need bike because University is a little far from my house so I need to go biking and and to the city center the same so I felt in that I need a bike one day I was near to class with with another bike because I was speaking and I didn’t see the bike and I was like wow so so close but nothing happened also when I was child I was biking and it was a big dog like w w wow wow and I fall but I fall in a wall and I had here you can you see that was from the bike I’m Eva I’m from Belgium I’m on Exchange here in Olu for 3 months because I study Physiotherapy and I’m doing my practical training here I got my own big bike that’s still mine I’m still using it before it was like little bikes like one of my grandmother and then now my brother Ed it after me and my sister so that were bikes that were in the whole family um the first days we had to go to the school of health and social care from here from Ula and everybody thought oh it’s not far it’s not far but we were walking like I think 30 40 minutes so if you have to do that like 3 days after each other and you’re walking so much that you really decide like I need a bike last week we were going to the swimming pool with four people and it was all ice so we already knew it was not that safe uh we started back and at a certain point uh one guy was very convinced that oh I won’t fall I won’t fall but he was the first one to fall down and I was riding in back of him so I didn’t want to crush him so I also had to break so I fell because he fell in my hometown it’s like a lot of people use bike but not that much but you have the bicycle roads but it’s just a red one next to the road and it’s not so safe it’s only sometimes there are some trees in between but not always and like here it’s crazy just so safe always the special bike Road and it’s even cleaned when it’s snowing and so like in Belgium they clean the main road but they don’t clean the bicycle roads I’m D and studying at u university of Sciences in School of Business I’m not actually quite used to like riding bikes to school or anything but after I came here everyone is like riding bikes so many cycle parts over here and um yeah it’s quite good and I think it’s good for the hill too cycling a bike so other than taking the bus or anything I think it’s good my home country in Sanka like we don’t use much bikes and uh cuz it’s uh mostly like vehicles and everything and it’s not even safe and and uh in here like there are like loads of bicycle parts most of the people over here they prefer cycling than taking their own vehicle the time that I’m studying in London like I find like a really big difference between London and here because even though there are like cycle parts in London it’s not that safe like in hu to cycle because it’s like too busy so yeah I think H is good for like cycling and everything uh well at night I was cycling to city center and then um when we were cying like it was like after like few days after the snow and it was like ice and I was passing s and I was trying to go about the bump and I fell off it was funny because I was here and the bike was like about 10 m away from me when I was about 8 or something me and my brother we were cycling and I said like okay let’s do a race he’s about like 4 years older than me so and he was like okay and then then I was like cycling so fast cuz I was really excited with my new bike and everything so then after that I was cing so fast and I uh applied the front brakes instead of the back one or the front one both together just only the front brakes so obviously like it holds like the front wheel so I went like that I feel like I was flying and yeah uh my name Isa they call mea I’m from Albania I’m 22 years old and I’m studying automation engineering as I remember I was 9 years old when I first tried to ride a bike it was quite difficult in the beginning the second day that I was here I saw so many people driving back and I realized oh my God I need a bik I have seen so many bikes and so few cars in Greece we see so many cars and if you see a person to ride a bike you say oh my God he’s riding bike it’s not common here is very safe and uh you can drive the bike and it’s good but uh I like it more in my country uh we you know we have mountains and uh with a bike you can do many things trips you change your view here I think they use it more I use it more for school home or go for shopping some like this every time that I drive my bag is a funny story it’s always singing and I’m always worry maybe if I move something fast or something like this maybe it’s broken and I will be dead there or something like this I remember once I was doing downhill writing and uh I was lucky that I survived because I was directly going to a tree and I just L the bike and I fell down [Music]
