I hope you still have the old BB. It might have the spindle length labeled on it. At the least you can measure for length.

With older bikes like this it’s sometimes better to use the original BB when possible. The BB spindles were often asymmetrical. If you put a symmetrical one on, one pedal will be closer to the frame than the other.
You can try putting a shorter spindle on, but the non-drive side may get too close to the cup.
There are some new BBs with asymmetrical spindles, but there are a lot of old ones available.
