Hi r/MTB, I’m rebuilding my Saracen Tufftrax 17′ out for the fourth time.
It’s been a good and reliable frame for many years and it’s cheaper (and greener) to rebuild yet again than buy a new bike.
The original Suntour forks crapped out on revamp #2 some years ago and since then I have been riding on a pair of cheap “zoom” 27.5″ rim grade forks, which have been ok for my use, even with a bbs02 mounted. [https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265083469309](https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265083469309)
However as expected, finally, the lockout mechanism has broken and spins freely, leaving the fork “locked out”, I could buy the special Shimano fork tool and attempt a much needed service myself, but I feel the fork is non – repairable, and is fairly rusted. Every mechanic I have spoke to won’t even look at the thing.
I’m looking for an alternative option than to buy another “disposable” fork which is not intended for “harder” riding anyway.
Second hand Rockshox seems to be the way to go atm, but I appreciate any other suggestions as they seem to have a tapered steerer, whereas the Tufftrax needs a straight steerer.
The idea is the keep the budget low as possible without making the ride dangerously cheap.

I know this is r/MTB, but do you need suspension? If you’re just riding around up to mild singletrack, I’d consider a steel fork and never worry about it again.
The Manitou Markhor is an excellent budget fork that will last if you do the proper maintenance.
