Finally put together my 2021 Salsa Timberjack SLX 29 after its frame sat in my garage for 4 years. Was using my Surly Karate Monkey for bikepacking and wanted more slant, more speed (Shimano SLX 12s) and less weight.

I’m loving it so far but am a little – not too much – concerned about my 35mm stem. With this slant geometry, I worry that it might be too twitchy. And with the 16° sweep on the SQlab bars 800mm it feels ok but not as comfy as the Tumbleweed Persuaders on my Surly.

Thoughts on what to expect on a long ride with gear?

Thanks

  1. I have a 2018 Timberjack and still ride it regularly. It handles weight with a handlebar roll quite well IMO but I can’t ride it no-handed. But compared to some other hard-tails I’ve tried it’s relatively stable. I even use a rear alternator rack once in a while. It’s a versatile bike. I put a 80mm stem on mine along with some Ergon touring grips with horns, Ergon SMC Core saddle, and mechanical brakes. I found the gearing to be adequate for the flats and climbs. Great frame.
