I miss the days before automobiles. Bikes, pedestrians, and carriages coexisted on roads. Look at all the spaces we have given up to cars, not just highways but also giant parking lots.

Honestly I’m surprised they still are making “biking lanes”. You mention cyclists online and every one gets frothy
Here in my country we have a “shared path” in most places for pedestrians and cyclists, and all other kind of “light traffic”.
This kind of works in city centers where even the cyclists are supposed to use reduced speeds and the fast cyclists usually take the road and it is kind of legal, like the police will not stop you cycling on the road at 30Km/h (20mph) zone if you keep up with the traffic.
But a little bit outside of the city centers the paths become somewhat dangerous. There are a lot of absent minded dog walkers where the walker is on one side of the path and the dog is on another, children play on these paths and then there are road cyclists doing well over 30Km/h (20mph), especially in down hills. The cyclists can’t go to the actual roads as there may not be anything else than highways where you are not allowed to cycle at all and the speed limit is like 55mph+. This is how I had a bad crash when I run into a dog leash that was going from one side to another and I saw it too late.
