Go easy on me, i'm very new to trying to work on my own bike.

I bought this used Paramount to be my "cruise around the city bike". But I must've messed up the limit screws or something, because I shifted the Campag rear mech into the spokes and destroyed it (and the rear dropout, which is being repaired).

Taking the opportunity to swap out for a modern groupset. Budget is up to ~$800ish. Gear ratio range, number of cogs, etc. don't matter too much to me since it's just my cruiser bike. But i'm not sure where to start with regards to determining what fill fit.

Open to any specific groupset suggestions (or advice on how to know what will fit)! Thanks!

With an older bike like it’s possible that the rear dropout spacing is 126 mm. If that’s the case technically a modern 130mm 9,10,11,12 speed hub won’t fit. However it’s possible to just stretch the dropouts apart since it’s a steel frame. The frame has inherent springiness to tolerate this. When you do that now you’ll have access to a modern groupset like this one which is in your pricerange:

Although if you already have Campagnolo parts on there consider keeping it vintage. Campy stuff is high quality. You can find older Campagnolo derailleurs on ebay.
