  1. This type of thru axle is kinda hard to remove and rusts easy, so if it where a different kind no/tiny bit, but for this one I’d go ham on it and wipe away the access. (For background info: I work in a bikeshop and when I had a client deliver his bike for a scheduled maintenance I tried to remove the front wheel and it didn’t come loose I had to hammer out the axle before it came out because after 1 year it was rusted to the hub.) so go ham on the axle with montage grease.

  2. Yes. They can seize up, especially if you don’t take them out regularly. A light smear of grease helps a lot.

  3. Grease on the axle itself is never a bad idea. Totally dry is probably not optimal.

    Those Suntour end-of-the-axle bits that I’m sure they think are very clever get to be a fucking PITA in time as they get gunked up. I’ve resorted to using WD40 or degreaser to clean them out then put a flowing dry lube in mine, and still struggle with it at times.
