How slack are you running your chain that you need to wrap the chainstay?

I’ve seen tape on the chainstay before, but why is it normally put there?

Remember, 1: you ride different brakeless. 2: you can stomp your shoe on top of your rear tire if the chain drops or brakes at the wrong time. It’s worth practicing a few times in your worst shoes so you have the muscle memory if it ever counts. It will ruin the shoe but your most expensive shoe is cheaper than an ambulance ride.
Everything mechanical can fail, even brakes (hydraulic has failed me more than my fixie chain, but it’s over my head and I’m my own shit mechanic)
