I know nothing about bikes and I feel like I’m missing a part. I made a quick fix just to ride it around. Anyone know what part I need. It’s a Jamis Trail X.

You need spacers!
Yep! What the other comment said. You need spacers. Enough to cover that bare part of the steerer tube + a little past it. Like the top of the top spacer should be maybe 3 mm higher than the top of the steerer tube.
