I have zero experience building bikes so maybe you folks can help me with a budget re-build of this trek 950?

I ride this all the time but I don't want to throw a ton of money into it. At this point I just want to replace what needs to be replaced. Specifically, the left crank is cracked and the rear rim is splitting at the seam. The derailleur / shifter works great and the brakes are fine.

One catch is that I mostly use the lowest 3 gears. The current crank is 175mm 46t and I think the small gear on the cassette is 12t.

So I think the parts I need are:

  1. 26" wheels – rim breaks, QR
  2. matching cassette for 1×7 or 1×8 in 135mm spacing
  3. 175mm crankset, bottom bracket, 46t chainring (or maybe 170mm + 44t is similar?)

Can anyone recommend a combination of parts for this scenario?

Why not just replace the left crankarm (needs to be same length but not same brand/model) and your rear wheel, swapping your current cassette, QR skewer and tire/tube onto the new rear wheel?

Also, crankarm length and chainring size are considered to be independent from each other — so there’s no typical metric that would say 175mm/46T is greater/lesser/equal to 170mm/44t. I think you might be onto something in terms of potential torque output, but human powered vehicles don’t conventionally get measured that way.
