Hi all,
I’m currently riding a circa 2011 Carrera TDF (£120, second-hand) I recently bought, that I’ve upgraded with SPD pedals. It’s been running fine for the last two months and has helped me catch the cycling bug, so I’m now looking to step up via my Cycle to Work scheme here in the UK.
After paralysing myself with excessive research, I’ve narrowed my choice to two bikes:
- Trek Domane AL 4 Gen 4 – £1,400
Aluminium frame, carbon fork, Shimano Tiagra 2×10. Big reputation for comfort and versatility, seems like a “do-it-all” road bike.
- Boardman SLR 9.0 Carbon – £1,800
Full carbon frame, Shimano 105 12-speed, more aero-styled.

As it’s on the Cycle to Work scheme, in real money these will cost me £70 per month or £90 per month from my salary for the next 12 months and my goal was always to keep it to £100 max so these options are fine.
My use case:
- Mostly fitness rides in the 20–50km range.
- Riding with my wife (hybrid) and daughters around the park, but also hoping to join more serious group rides later.
- Budget conscious, but I want a solid, fresh bike that I can keep for at least 5 years (and ideally 10 if my cycling ambitions level out).
- If the cycling bug continues, I’d consider spending more in future as some of the aero bikes look gorgeous – part of the appeal of the Boardman to be honest as it is a little more aero shaped.
The Trek seems like a smart, practical choice for £1,400 and everyone says it’s built to last. But the Boardman has a FULL carbon frame and newer groupset for £400 more — though it doesn’t carry the same brand prestige as Trek.
Given my goals and budget, which would you recommend: the safe, sensible Trek, or the better-specced Boardman?
Note: I’ve seen mention of the AL5 Gen 4 (£1,600 here in UK) which I know has 105, however:
-
I’m keen on the white and it isn’t even available in this market in anything but black as far as I’ve found.
-
As much as I see Tiagra talked down compared to 105, my current bike will likely make Tiagra feel like Di2 (yeah, I’ve been reading 😜).
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
