This is my 6yr old apollo excelle. Its the bike I use for commutes and travel. Its got a couple flat spots but its reliable (even if its slow). All the issues ive had in the past ive been able to repair myself but this one is a little different. My grandad said he'd help me fix it but im insure if its worth it. Should I get a new wheel? Or retire the bike? Do you have any tips or advice? 🙂

you would need at least a new rim, but sometimes it makes more sense to buy a new wheel. changing a rim can take time and if you don’t do it yourself it’s likely to cost more than a new wheel.

  2. If you are going to do anything then a new wheel is easiest.

You could get a new rim of the exact same type and replace just the rim, would be a good opportunity to learn how to build a wheel.

If it is not cracking and the thump thump of the brakes is not dangerous or driving you nuts you could ride it for quite a while longer.

It is an aluminum rim. Do not try to reshape it back, it will crack soon and probably at the worst possible time.

Personally I would replace the wheel, then rebuild the old one this winter. Wheel building is sort of fun and very rewarding.
