80s era bike. First picture is the drive side lockring that's like an oval. Second picture is non-drive side lockring with three notches.

Almost looks like a crescent will fit on the drive side.

Do I need to fully remove the BB to service the bearings? I was thinking I could just remove the drive side lockring and leave the bb in and replace bearings and regrease without having to pull the whole thing. But now I see the lockring with notches is on the non-drive side like you are meant to remove from that side.

  1. Go in from non drive side. Remove the lockring with a crescent spanner and then the cup with a pin spanner no need to remove the drive side unless you want to. Vast majority of the time all these cup & cone BB’s need is a clean & regrease but even if the bearings are shot new ones are really cheap.

Hiya. I think you may be able to do a more thorough service if you take everything out. There could be frame corrosion in there. If the bearings aren’t sealed, you’ll need to replace both of those.
