British Steel staff and civil servants will spend Monday attempting to avert the permanent shutdown of Britain’s last primary steelmaking plant.

The company, which was taken over by the Government on Saturday, faces a race against time to ensure it has enough raw materials to keep the two blast furnaces at its Scunthorpe plant burning.

  2. An out of date run down plant, requires full refurbishment or replacement.
This smacks of 2003/4 Motor Industry.
It will drain dry any resources that are put in until the penny drops

  3. Perhaps a joint deal with both Tata and Rainham Steel should be examined. If the figures make sense to common sense and technical expertise and logistics, it would be worthwhile in sound aspects. The loss of livelihoods for 2,700 staff is a serious matter.
A sensible solution would cheer up all those families in Scunthorpe.
The high cost of electricity is a big concern. That cost must be reduced for all of industry.

  4. I hope it is saved but I am a major cynic. Nationalised within three months and then, within three years, the union is balloting workers on strike action unless a 20% pay increase is agreed, or some such nonsense.

  5. Buying coke coal from Japan via China now blackmailed head to ransom!! Looks like, end day Blackrock owners control china usa here every country via banks control

  6. Net zero before common sense UK has gas and coal that could provide thousands of jobs. The powers that be should put country first and not send jobs overseas where pollution standards are less.

  7. Ah dont fret ..the Scottish MSP's have awarded themselves a £20 thousand pounds per year wage rise ..all out of fairness as First Minister Swinney has informed everyone ! Thats a £384 pounds and change per week …every week . Cost of living crisis ….yeah sure !

  8. I was never a Labour supporter and still am not as I hate politicians.. but the privatisation of our railways, infrastructure, housing was the most disgusting episode of our countries history… all for a quick profit… now we reap the reward of this short sightedness

  9. Once those furnaces are turned off they're useless. Who is going to pay for that? The government will no doubt levy the taxpayer for their own ignorant incompetence.

  10. Great news the civil servants have got involved. That will sort it then. What a bloody mess. The country who started the industrial revolution lost 2 blast furnace’s at Port Talbot in September and are now on the brink of losing our last 2 meaning we can no longer make iron/steel. Let’s hope we never have to defend ourselves. We could always throw a few apples. Just for the record with the 4 blast furnaces in operation the UK still made less steel in one YEAR than China makes in one DAY. Just as long as we reduce our CO2 emissions 🤦‍♂️

  11. Steel, like coal, water and electricity is fundamental to our economy and yet we allow closures and hostile take overs. Pure greed by the government’s. Anyone who fabricates and welds with steel knows that certain imported steel is utter rubbish.

  12. Nationalising companies is against the principles of democracy and a free market economy. The UK is heading towards socialism and communism with the British government already controlling railways, postal services, military and more. All these need to be privatised. Only a military intervention can now save British democracy.
