Hello bike commuters!

As the title says, I'm looking for tail light recommendations. I am trying to outfit three bikes (wife and two younger kids) with taillights. My issue is that none of them will EVER remember to turn them off or on 🙁

I found what I thought was a great option– a USB-C rechargeable taillight with light sensing and auto on/off. When I received them and read through the manual, I found that they don't work as I need.

Unfortunately, it seems that the two modes that have auto on/off functionality also use the light sensor and only work in darkness. So they are really only auto on/off at night, which seems like an odd choice.

My wife and kids are rarely, if ever, going to ride in darkness. I need lights that will come on as soon as they move the bike to ride it and go off after some period of time stationary. Bonus if it also offers a brake light, but not required.

Thanks for your collective help!

  1. About the only way to reliably do this is with a dynamo setup, but that’s expensive (custom wheel build with the hub, plus lights and wires). There’s also the issue of training to disconnect the wires before removing the front wheel, e.g., when changing a flat tire.

That said, many dynamo lights have a capacitor that keeps the light on for a few minutes while stopped, then comes back on as soon as the wheel rotates, generating power. The Busch & Müller Toplight Line Plus Brake is a good model with the capacitor and a brake light that works by sensing the AC frequency from the dynamo hub. This taillight usually plugs into a fork-mounted headlight that in turn plugs into the hub.
