The last few days this has randomly happened to my chain while backpedaling during riding (not everytime though). Is this caused by a worn chain and/or casette? I thought maybe it could be a problem with the rear hub but i replaced my rear wheel fairly recently (~4 months ago) so i doubt that.
Together with this problem i started encountering another problem. Whenever i stand still and i put pressure on my pedals to start moving, my chain doesnt find tension (can’t explain it better) and i just fall through and lose balance. This problem started around the same time. Could this be caused by a worn chain or is there another problem i can’t think of.
Appreciate the help!

The same thing happens on my mountain bike on some gears so if anyone knows why can you let me know why too
If your chain does this, it’s because the freehub isn’t spinning as freely it should. Could be an issue with the hub, could be a broken wheel axle, could be a bunch of things. I would focus my investigation on the freehub to start with.
If that looks OK, see if the jockey wheels on the derailleur move freely, they could be jammed up with some detritus.
Is your drive train clean and lubricated properly?
Mine did this and it was chain stretch. New chain and the problem was solved for me.
Looks like a problem with the jockey wheel. You may need a new derailleur.
Going to go with the free hub, I’ve seen things happen like this with freewheel bicycles, I imagine what’s happening is it’s engaging some what normally and when you stop pedalling the free hub should be allowing the cassette to stay in place with the hub turns, what looks like is happening is when you stop pedalling the free hub and cassette continue to move which would then release all the tension from the chain.
My old bike used to do this. I added lubrication to everything I can see and the problem went away
I overfilled my freehub with grease once trying to quiet it down and it did the same thing.
Most likely the freewheel hub. Remove it, then spray lubricant in it ( WD-40) to flush it out. Drain excess and reassemble.
What model Trek is that?
did you check all the parts involved to see if they spin freely?
kinda looks like the upper jockey wheel is interfering with the cassette sprockets but can’t see from this angle. the adjustment screw is behind the main pivot / mounting bolt on the derailleur. it may be that your derailleur is too short and/or your cassette is too wide.
that second issue could also be caused by gummed up pawls in the freehub.
