Hi all. I'm took part in a gravel event today and my derailleur completely snapped in half. I can't think how it happened. It's a fairly new bike, maybe 500 miles in a few months. I heard a loud snap sound that I initially thought was a stone hitting the frame but seconds later I ground to halt and this was the mess I was faced with. Any idea how this happens? Would I have any case to go back to the manufacturer?

Derailleurs break *all the time*, usually because it dangles there and something hits and breaks it. In this case, and I **very rarely say this**, but I think you might have a genuinely defective product there. You don’t have any signs of impact, you’re in the middle of your cassette, and you appear to have been legitimately JRAing.
If it’s a warranty, Shimano will not handle it with you, they will direct you to go back to the dealer. So the first step is to take it back to the dealer you bought it from and see what they think.
It sounds like you were not pedaling at the time of the snap. Were you?
Did you hit something?
