I’ll start off my one day in Newcastle by crossing the city’s most famous landmark – the epic Tyne bridge which is a steel and granite single spanned arched bridge opened in 1928. From the bridge we’ll get some wonderful views across the city and see plenty of pigeons.

Next we’ll walk through the Black Gate and buy a ticket to enter the New Castle as I tell you the story of how Newcastle got its name. There’s plenty of train tracks, ruined fortifications and Union Jack flags to keep us entertained. I’ll stop off at the Victoria Monument and then visit the impressive Newcastle Cathedral. Whilst there I’ll tell you about its turbulent history and explore inside.

There’s no doubt in my mind that Newcastle city centre is underrated. The architecture, grand buildings, colourful street art and pulsing atmosphere make it a great place to hang out. I found the best spot at the confluence of Grainger Street, Grey Street and Blackett Street where the Earl Grey Statue stands. Earl Grey was a former British Prime Minister so we’ll delve into his legacy and why he got his own statue in the most prominent spot in town.

After a bite to eat I walked through the Victorian era Victoria Shopping Arcade, past some of the city’s former defensive walls, across Chinatown and onto St James’ park – the home of Newcastle United Football Club. I spent some time looking at the Sir Bobby Robson Memorial and some of the historic photographs displayed at St James’ Park underground station, including the famous Vinnie Jones & Paul Gascoigne one!

With that I walked across the city to the entrance of the Victoria Coal Tunnel and learnt about the part Newcastle played in the industrial revolution, including what the tunnels were used for and how it all operated. Following this I took a gentle stroll through Ouseburn Valley – admiring the tall viaduct, micro breweries and quiet brook I found at the bottom.

As afternoon turned into evening I returned to the banks of the River Tyne, admired the humongous Baltic Flour Mill, soaked in some of the atmosphere and got ready to enjoy a bit of Newcastle’s famous nightlife. Is one day in Newcastle enough? No! But I think I did the place justice.

  1. the comment at around 7 minutes saying it became a prison is wrong, it became a jail. Prison is long term in this respect and jail is not

  2. Come over to Gateshead if any of the bridges are safe enough to cross and see why Gateshead makes Gaza look like Las Vegas
. It's the only place you'll get paid a visitor fee instead of a tax

  3. Hello YouTube can we please have these types of video banned please because more people will see our amazing city and I don't want that, I want to keep the city that first had electricity, invented windscreen wipers and many other things, and has the Geordies, who are the most amazing people in Britain, and is the gateway to the stunning Northumberland, and it's coast that has the most castles than any county in England, and you can walk on miles of sand and be alone, so please ban these disgusting videos please, because secretly it's still got the plague and you could die. Honest. Hahahaha greatest city in Britain with the greatest people and greatest pubs. All are welcome, apart from Mackems and those from London with that awful modern youth language, talking about feds and fam and keep your knives down there because up here we're brought up to not be a coward.

  4. If you look east along the river on the left hand side you will see a church up high in the distance and I promise if you go to it you can see the whole of Newcastle.

  5. Walk past the tunnel towards the chimney and turn left across the bridge on the right is the Free Trade pub and that pub you have a free jukebox you can graffiti in the toilets and it has the best view of any pub in Newcastle. Ouseburn is crap but the Tyne Bar and free trade are great, and the Tanners pub but down in ouseburn they made a mistake of trying to make it middle class, even taking the name of the farm away. The pubs there, the Cluny and the ship are crap also.

  6. Thank you for showing my city. Usually people just talk about our nightlife as that’s why most people visit us. But you showed our beautiful buildings and our history. Hope you visit again x

  7. It's better than average and it's THE most northerly city in England. City of steel? More like coal and ships, or at least it was.

  8. This must have been made well before Christmas 2024, the Tyne bridge has been covered in scaffold since around christmas, it's finally getting repaired and painted but this liebour government are refuse to pay up the last £6 million installment of the £40 million cost, all the costs had been approved but now liebour wants to play games

  9. What a fantastic video. Thank you! I just didn't want your tour to end – fascinating detail, great views. I had a real sense of being there and was sad to have to leave. Cheers!

  10. FYI Richard Grainger was the developer. John Dobson was the main architect. Supported by the town clerk, John Clayton. Clayton Streets and Grainger Street surround the Grainger Markets. Very well planned. You can see when walking down a side street that they made the building straight ahead of you, on the cross street, fancier in that section so you would have a better view.
