I'm on a big bikepacking trip from the Netherlands to Athens. It is my first one and so far it is really going well. I crossed the alps with no problem. In 2 days i'll arrive in Zagreb. From then onwards my route is unplanned. I had two very rough options:
1. Go via Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania (but avoid the coast because crowds) -> very mountainoud
2. More inland via northern Croatia, Serbia and North Macedonia.

Before my trip I was more leaning towards option 2 because I was scared of all the climbs (not used to + I'm heavily packed). Now the Alps went pretty well Im not sure anymore. Also I tried to make some variations with AI: see the screenshots.

What would you guys do? Any considerations?

Btw, I'm avaraging around 80-110 km per dag.

  1. If you like the scenery, go more south. There are a few options, but more spectacular than going east from Zagreb.
