  1. It’s a regular adjuster like on your rear derailleur. You could try to lightly grab the housing ferrel with pliers so the adjuster twists independently from the housing.

Max put the cable tension by shifting into the appropriate largest cog.

Stop pedalling, release the cable tension by clicking the shifter.

Have plenty of slack to adjust + lube the ferrule whilst you’re there.

When you next replace the outers, look to replace those ferrules with metal ones that will turn more freely

  3. yeah this is a problem. you can add a drop of oil around the end of the ferrule so it doesn’t stick to the inside of the barrel.

you can add tension by shifting into the high gear. actually what i like to do is kinda the opposite: shift the chain onto the large gear, then click your shifter back to the smaller gear but *don’t pedal forward* so the chain stays on the big gear. this will remove all tension from the cable, allowing you to pull the housing out of the barrel. that will help you get some lube down there or let you set the barrel to where you want it.

These work best with metal ferrules and a drop of lube or grease.

They also can break and are a pain to remove. So be gentle.
