STORYLINE:

Tens of thousands of cyclists took part in a Critical Mass event along the streets of Budapest on Sunday to mark the annual Earth Day.
The rally was organized by a number of NGOs (non-governmental organizations) to promote urban cycling, fight for safe bicycle paths and to protest against air and noise pollution.
“They are doing this because they want to have more paths for the bicycles, and I think this is very important. And we did that in Sao Paulo in Brazil and now we have a lot of paths,” Danielli Navaro, a Brazilian rally participant said.
“People are now using bikes to go working, and they”re not using cars that much. I think it”s important for cities, they are getting bigger,” she added.
The Critical Mass movement was founded in California in 1992, with the first ride held in San Francisco.
The first organised Critical Mass event in Budapest took place 12 years later and since then numbers have steadily grown.
According to the Budapest municipality, the number of everyday bikers in recent years has doubled year on year, a unique level of growth in Europe.
