Avignon, a city in Provence in the southeast of France, is crossed by the Rhรดne. From 1309 to 1377, the Catholic popes elected residence in the city. It remained under the papal reign until 1791, when it was attached to France. The Palais des Papes, which is located in the city center, is surrounded by medieval stone ramparts and testifies to this history.
