I would replace that helmet because it looks like it is 40 years old

You definitely should if you can afford to. I’d replace it asap.

If you think wearing a helmet is important, you should replace that one because the styrofoam / polystyrene will break without absorbing any significant energy.

How did you get the dent? Accident? Was it dropped? Or was something wedged against it in the trunk/garage?
EastCoast_Cyclist on
Coming from a MTB background where I broke several helmets over the early years (from going over the bars), I believe your helmet is still structurally sound and safe to use.
Larger dents, missing chunks, or through-and-through cracks in the foam would be reasons to toss it out of safety concerns.
austinmiles on
Was it from an accident or because something pressed against it?
I’m guessing the latter and no I would not replace it for that. Mine has a similar dent because my wife jammed something next to it in a bag. It’s just the foam at that very specific point and won’t impact the function which is to absorb and diffuse the forces.

No, not for this dent. If that‘s all.
ottawian_guy on
This may not be the last dent, as the foam facing outwards (especially on the curves) does not conform to the regular pattern of helmet construction.

Helmets do have an expiration, and I believe this surpasses that.

i put a large gouge in my Giro Atmos circa ’08. My bike fell on top of it in a parking lot. still using it. it is due to be replaced because the foam has deteriorated.

Assuming this helmet isn’t ancient, it’ll be fine. If it’s ancient, I’d replace it dent or no-dent. Helmets have a lifespan. While it’s not as aggressive as helmet manufacturers tell you, you should be replacing your helmets after a few years, regardless of damage. Most helmet manufacturers, according to a quick google search, suggest replacing your helmet after 3ish years. I would say 5 years is probably more appropriate, unless you start seeing signs of wear in the foam earlier.
Helmet wear/damage posts always end up kinda contentious and people will scream “REPLACE” at the first tiny hint of wear or damage, or suggest you should be buying a new helmet at some crazy frequency. It’s obviously wildly important – you only have one head/brain and protecting it should be a significant priority… but people tend to get a little extra when it comes to helmets.
**THAT SAID – if you’re ever unsure, it is 100% the best practice to be “better safe than sorry” with your brain.** If you’re even the least bit worried about your helmet, just replace it and you won’t have to worry about it for a few more years.

You are fine. It’s a depression in the foam not a crack. Mips is mips. Ignore the hate. You are good, enjoy your rides!

Personally it depends now you got the dent. If it was just from dropping the helmet on the ground, or resting something heavy on it I would not be too worried. If it was from a strong impact that might have compromised more than we can see.

The question is ‘how did it get the dent’?
If it got the dent because it was dropped or bashed, then I would consider replacing it. It has taken a reasonable shock, and that can be enough to compromise it.
If the dent was caused in a less violent manner – it got squished in a bag or similar and a corner of something got pushed against it, I would be more willing to continue wearing it

You should be replacing your helmet every other month. Once a month if you haven’t used it. – the bike helmet industrial complex.

Not in a million years. It’s not high tech, it’s styrofoam. If the styrofoam is intact, the helmet is fine. Manufacturers tell you to replace after X years. Why? So they can sell you a new helmet. And there are just enough overly-cautious people for that to be a lucrative business model. If you’re racing a motorcycle at 150mph, replace your helmet regularly. If you’re riding your bike at 20mph, you’re fine.
