Just got back from a ride and saw, to my dismay a missing knob! It looks like it tore off completely, exposing some of the second layer, shown in the picture. There is a second knob on the same side that looks like it will go soon, along with a few small spots showing exposed mesh. The center knobs are in fairly good shape, as is the other side.

I'm buying a new tire today, but I'm reluctant to toss this one yet, since it only has ~400 miles on it. Can I throw some rubber cement on there and send it? It held air the entire ride, but I doubt that spot would take another big hit.

The tire is a Specialized Eliminator Grid Gravity. I couldn't find a breakdown of the construction, but I'm assuming this mesh layer is in between the inner and outer rubber layers.

PS. Any recommendations for rear tires on en EMTB? I'm in the desert, so everything is hot, dry, and sharp. Probably leaning toward something more durable, since the weight isn't a huge factor for the e bike. Thanks!

  1. I don’t know about anyone else, but the center knobs look at a little rough. I personally would keep riding it, but I would tell a customer is time to replace it.

Yes, you need to replace it and I wouldn’t ride it as it. It doesn’t matter how many miles it has on it, when it’s dead, it’s dead. Sure, you might get a few more miles, but then again, you might not and no one wants that hospital bill!

  3. I don’t know that the Eliminator is ebike rated but the knobs as a whole look pretty bad. Personally I’d ride it until I lost a few more knobs but not my bike, buy a new tire

    Vittoria e-Mazza
    Conti Kryptotal Re
    Schwalbe Eddy

All of these are ebike rated and may last longer.

nothing says holy shit like losing traction in a turn because your tire knobs are ripping off. safety hazard.
