This place had been on my list for years but the stars never aligned. Until they did, with a trip to Germany which allowed a quick detour over the border. To…

STRASBOURG, FRANCE

Welcome to Strasbourg, a place where fairytale timber meets moonlight and painted shutters grace crooked walls.

Understandably, the UNESCO World Heritage Sites steal the show but here are some other suggestions to bookmark:

🏛️ Climb the cathedral—then stay for the light show
The view from Strasbourg Cathedral’s platform is worth every step. In summer, linger until nightfall for the Illuminations de la Cathédrale, when the façade dances with light and music.

🛶 Kayak through Petite France
Forget the tourist boat cruise—rent a kayak and drift past medieval half-timbered houses, quiet canals and the historic Vauban Dam.

🧀 Eat tarte flambée the right way
Try this Alsatian classic (flammekueche: thin crust, crème fraîche, onions, bacon and a run on your cholesterol) at a traditional winstub like Chez Yvonne. Best paired with a chilled glass of local Riesling.

🎨 Explore the Musée d’Art Moderne
Skip the queues at the more famous museums and head to this riverfront gallery. Bonus: the rooftop terrace café is a quiet spot for coffee and city views.

🛍️ Stroll the Krutenau district
Strasbourg’s student quarter is packed with indie bookshops, upcycled fashion boutiques and relaxed bars. Try Bar le Chat Perché for a quick pit stop.

🍓 What to eat in Strasbourg in June
– Fresh cherries and rhubarb tarts from the market at Place Broglie
– Kougelhopf from Maison Kammerzell (sit by the window for the view)
– White asparagus (still in season!) in a buttery Alsatian sauce

🚲 Bonus tip: Rent a bike and ride the Forts Trail – up to 88km if you’re feeling energetic, on either side of the Rhine. Or you could just choose a short segment and make the most of the cafes.
