My most cheeky camp yet — right in a London suburb 😘. It wasn’t exactly wild, but it was definitely one for the memory bank. I packed up my Dawes Galaxy touring bike, loaded with five bags of camping gear and my camera setup, and set off for Maidstone in Kent.
This is part of my two-month adventure riding the Velo Route 1 all the way to the bottom of Italy, with no trains or buses — just pedal power. Along the way, I’m chasing hidden camping spots, small towns, and those moments you never get when you travel fast.
Cycling out of London was busy, weaving through suburbs, traffic, and villages, but every kilometre gets me closer to Italy. This journey isn’t about the quickest route — it’s about the people I meet, the places I camp, and the reality of living life on the road with everything I need strapped to my bike.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s really like to travel long distances by bike, camp wherever you can, and embrace the unexpected, stick around. There’s plenty more to come on this ride.

Ireland to Italy. I don’t know what day it is. Seven, eight, maybe. Just on the outskirts of London here about to pack up my things and hit the road. For the past week, I’ve been making my way along the VO route 1 to the south of Italy. My goal is to cycle the entire distance in what will be a twomonth adventure. Been following along this motorway cycle path all day. London is a massive city. I just can’t believe how big it is. Finally, after 5 hours on the bike, I had arrived. Time to rest up and prep for tomorrow’s adventure.
