I bought some medium sized bar ends to use on my hybrid handlebar, as inner bars to help give me more hand position options and be more aerodynamic at higher speeds.

My commute is a mix of busy city roads and stretches of bike trail with some hills. For the city roads I’d prefer using the flat handlebars for better control, with the brakes easily accessible.

I’ve read that it’s best to put the inner bar ends between the brake/shifter and handlebar, so you can still brake with your pinky when using the bar ends. However, wouldn’t that make it harder to use the brakes/shifters using the original horizontal handlebar?

Is it a bad idea to put the bar ends on the inside of the brake/shifter housing?

I don’t think it’s a bad idea at all, the bar ends can act like thumb rests. I forget the name right now, I think they’re called toggies (too lazy to google), but they’re essentially a smaller version of what you’re envisioning. I say go for it if you don’t mind having your controls a little further inboard.

I bought the 410 (ver 2) “inner bar ends” from SQ Lab and have them placed between the grips and brake levers. That’s also how they demonstrate the product. Hope yours works out well, I’ve been enjoying mine.
