  1. Fresh meat alert 😉 Just back from the Carinthian Lake Loop – I think a still “under-the-radar” 400 km cycle route through Austria’s lake-filled valleys. Spoiler: I’m a fan 🙂

Here comes a batch of shots from a relatively new cycling route in Carinthia, Austria. It’s the Carinthian Lake Loop, roughly 400 kilometres of riding through Carinthia’s valleys – or more accurately, from lake to lake, in keeping with the theme.

I suspect that when the Carinthian Lake Loop was created, the idea was simply to keep cycle tourists in the region for longer than usual. Because most people just pass through Carinthia – either north to south on the Alpe-Adria route or west to east on the Drava Cycle Route.

The Loop starts and ends in Villach, ticking off pretty much all the better-known valleys along the way. And importantly, it makes great use of dedicated cycle paths and quiet local roads where you’ll hardly see a car.

The exceptions are two stretches on the western loop – first heading towards Millstätter See, then descending from Weißensee to the Gail Valley – where traffic is heavier. Not a big deal for adult riders, but worth thinking twice about if you’re travelling with kids.

Carinthia also delivers on attractions: the truly spectacular Hochosterwitz Castle, Landskron Castle with its bird-of-prey shows, the holiday vibe of Villach and Klagenfurt, plenty of bathing spots, pools, spas and some interesting museums.

I need to admit it – I’m a Carinthia fan. This is exactly the kind of cycling I like: good roads, interesting places, a bit of rolling terrain, but nothing too “killer”. And if you haven’t had enough yet, check out my brand new article from today about the entire route:

    And ride safe! 🙂
