My wife and I have a daughter who is almost 4 and we want to start getting into biking more with her. I have an old Gary Fisher from the early 00’s so I might be looking to upgrade if this is something we keep doing.

I found this one on pinkbike near me asking $600 (ad has been up a while, can probably offer less. Though not sure if that’s a red flag or not) We’ll mostly be riding pavement and some light hiking trails, so I wouldn’t mind sticking smoother tires on the G.F. for road rides, and having a MTB for when we do trails.

It seems like it’s had a lot of work done, the ad says

New shimano deore 4 piston brakes
New Yari rock shox 130 mm fork
New ks dropper post
New maxxis tires

My other option is a 2023 norco storm 2 that a friend is selling for $800. He got the $1200 model for $1000 due to the bike shop messing up, so it has some upgraded features like a dropper post.

The Kona is a 2016 frame from what I can tell, and my only concerns are if all the parts were installed properly, and why the ad has been up for so long. Maybe people in the know can see something I can’t about why to avoid it. So I either take a bit more of a risk on a cheaper bike, or pay more for one I know the history of.

Anyone have any insight? Thanks in advance.

Pinkbike isn’t really for people who want to sell bikes quickly, it’s for people who want to sell for higher prices to people who are looking for something specific. So I wouldn’t judge too much from how long an ad has been up, especially if you’re not in a particularly big city.

You can also find some good deals on new hardtails, so bear in mind those options when figuring out what you want to pay second hand. Of course, you’d have to pay tax and stuff on top.
