Got the wheel as close as I could and had very minimal rubbing, so I rounded the outer knobs off just a little with the grinder. Spins clean now!

I recently put some 42s on my varsity. Definitely a cool look and ride for these old bikes.
What a monster! That’s what’s great about 27″ bikes when it comes to retro-moding old road bikes. I wish all bikes from that era had that extra room to play with. Like, I’d love to have an 853 LeMond that could fit even 32s with safe tire clearance. An 80s Bridgestone road bike is my current project for this very reason. I’m not gonna be shaving down any tires though, but it’s fun to see what’s possible!
