Inspired by the genius of Robert Houdin, we indulge in a bit of Street Magic. It’s time to get back on the road. Our destination is the FISM in Rimini. Here, among the judges of the World Magic Championship, we’ll also find Norbert Ferré, world champion. FISM 2003. Oh. Santa Maria. We are here in NY with. Norbert Ferrè, in Italian Norberto Ferrero, sono francese, nessuno è perfetto Parfaite and we can talk. De. The history and artistic history of Norbert. I started magic in 1986 by seeing a magician work and I went to see him at the end of the show asking him to wait for me a trick and he was kind enough to teach me a trick. How to make a coin disappear and it started from there. I joined a magic club. I then finished my studies in psychology. By chance, I participated in my first film convention completely by chance, because I simply had a friend who contacted me saying I was going to participate in the competition. This friend in question is David Stone. And me, that same evening, I went to bed and I said to myself why not participate too. It was in 2000 and it was for the Physics Congress in Lisbon. And I arrived there almost for my first competition where I had the pleasure of winning second prize in manipulation. And then, three years later, at the firm in The Hague, I won first prize in manipulation and the Grand Prize. But it was a career completely by chance. And after that, I… I told myself that when I won the Grand Prize, that it was from that moment that the work began and that it was necessary to start working. What is magic for one… Do you have a personal definition of magic? Not particularly, but I believe that magic happens of course in the magical facts with the material that we use. That’s the first basis, but after that it’s the magic that we have inside us, that is to say the timing, the energy that we put into doing the trick, the personality that we have when performing. And all these aspects are a little invisible, but there is a big part, and we notice that in competition. There are a lot of magicians who do tricks and the tricks are magical, but they are not magic. And there are some magicians who do few tricks, but they do them wonderfully well because they themselves are magical in their timing, in their personality, in their execution, in all that, which also remains invisible to the eyes of the spectators but which they feel and sense very well. Of course, and I think it is interesting to diversify your act. So the big advantage of diversifying your act is that if in this magic show, we have the chance to be able to add other arts, like a little bit of juggling, a little bit of humor, a little bit of the main objective, what is it? The objective is that the audience first and foremost has a good time. What interests me is to really enjoy myself on stage and then, of course, to please the audience. Because it can’t be a solitary job. I also need the audience’s response. Humor is a great strength, it allows for a shift, it allows you to put things into perspective and not take yourself too seriously in this world that isn’t really serious. A personal definition If you have a definition of reality and… Reality, I would say that it’s everything that ‘s the opposite of the show in a way. Reality, what is it? For me, it’s all the preparation where you have to have a certain reality in your career and in your construction to be able to put serious things in place in opposition to reality. Everything that is magic and imagination in these cases, is when I’m on stage. But there can only be this magic, this imagination in opposition, if I have worked on my reality beforehand. How important it is to give emotions and also the emotion of oneself in the show, in a show and even in magic. I don’t think there is a real show without emotion. A show, whatever it is, must convey an emotion. I would say if the show is good. Then, there are different styles of emotions, of course, positive and negative emotions. For example, in my act, I chose two styles of emotion: one side is humorous emotion where I try as best I can to make people laugh. And before trying to make them laugh, the gag must of course make me laugh or please me. And on the other hand, in my manipulation act, it’s more of a pure emotion which is an emotion, a magical emotion. But I think and I am deeply convinced of it, emotion is essential in the production of a show. If there is no emotion, it’s a bland show. It was just the period when I believed in Santa Claus, so for a very long time, and I still believe in him. But when I saw a guy who took a dove and put it in a scarf, the dove disappeared. He showed an empty scarf, a dove appeared. I found that magic there that Santa Claus made me believe , who came into a house, who came in through the chimney. Especially since I didn’t have a chimney, I thought he came in through the radiator. But when I was a child, I looked for where he could get in. The young child that I was could realize with his own eyes that magic existed. Okay, there was a trick, but almost. I had ignored that. I didn’t want to think about it now, it was up to me to be able to learn everything and to be able to be a magician in my turn. And there is this transition period where we know about magic fairies and disappearance. We know the explanation, but we can’t realize it and we have to manage to move on to the third stage which is We know magic fairies, we know the trick and we can realize it. And there, it’s another discovery of magic. For example, yesterday, I called Santa Maria, they told me No, it’s Jesus. Oh my God! No, no, it’s Jesus. Some advice for people, not even people anyway. Someone who has their Magic pocket and their advice. So for someone who wants to get closer to magic, I would tell them and only their passion will allow them to develop or not. If we are the magicians, we are very lucky and to have this passion. There is a philosopher who said Nothing is accomplished in a world without passion. Now, if I had advice to give to someone who is already a magician and who, for example, wants to compete, I would very willingly tell them not to listen to advice, not to listen to it and to do things differently from others. We have attended competitions, you know that. I am here in the world championship as a member of the jury. So I’ve seen all the magic competitions, stage competitions. And what stands out? In fact, it’s the people who arrive with, had new things , and to have new things, you shouldn’t listen too much. Or you have to listen to try to do the opposite and then listen to your heart and listen to your passion. So if I had one piece of advice for young magicians, I would gladly tell them those who are discovering magic. Well, practice, see if you like it. And if by chance, if by miracle, because it’s a true marvel, magic is fabulous, it almost allows you to sometimes even pass for a demigod. It’s a wonderful passion that opens different doors. Because when you’re interested in magic, you can be interested in pantomimes, you can be interested in another art that encompasses all of that. And then, as for amateurs, I would say the more experienced ones. Above all, don’t listen too much to advice, work a lot, work, create things and it’s only at the end where you can ask for advice from people you trust, from high-level magicians who will say OK, that seven comma there, and you put it in like that and there, bam! But first of all, there must already be all this hard work beforehand. If the person is good with a complete number where he worked on it, he worked, worked, worked, he comes to see me saying give me some advice there yes, I’m going to tell him ok, add a comma there, you put it in black because it’s much better compared to that, to that, that’s what it’s for. There, it’s interesting. And there, for him, it’s worth gold because I will give him my experience and I will explain to him why. But first of all, upstream, before, there must already be a lot of nourishing work. You, and try to tell yourself above all not to do like me. That’s what it means to change and find your own and listen to your son, to listen to yourself. In any case, I also wanted to thank you and congratulate you because you did it. You had a super beautiful project that you completed and it’s truly remarkable. What you did is really very, very, very good, it’s superb. A big, big bravo! And next time, you’ll have to. If you raise money, raise it all for the Norbert Ferrer Foundation. Okay? Thank you. Well done. On Tour in France. Doing Street Magic, right here. I’m noticing that this city still represents magic. It’s not seen every day, so there’s a bit of a barrier between the magician and the spectator caught off the street, so you’ll never be there. Worth it. Yes, it’s very. though, to see people’s final reactions because they’re truly amazed, truly excited. Pop. One of the four at the same time. He immediately takes the card that’s one. Good. Go ahead.
