Embarked on a cycle ride with 10 year old daughter to Gloucester on a Sunday morning this summer. Wanted to find the Lion sculptures in Gloucester that are part of the Lions At Large – Pride of Gloucestershire Trail (https://lionsatlarge.co.uk). Hence decided to bike to Gloucester – King’s Square. And then follow the trail by cycling (where possible) or walking.

The total distance from Cheltenham (Arle Court) to Gloucester (King’s Square) using the cycle path was approx 10.25 km. There were a few parts where we had to merge onto the road due to temporary roadworks and also at the Estcourt Rd roundabout. The approx distance that we cycled on the road alongside other motor vehicles was probably less than a total of 1.25 km. Most of it was along the London Road where the existing dedicated cycle path was removed due to roadworks and are now expected to complete around mid August.

Created this video which is a time-lapsed version of the entire journey. For the benefit of those who have not yet used the cycle path, I have highlighted the sections of the ride which are on dedicated cycle lanes, shared paths, sections to merge onto the road, Traffic Light junctions & T-junctions to be aware of etc (check the notes at the top). Have also provided information of the various junction names (check notes at the bottom).

Hope this shortened video gives you an idea of what to expect if you have not already tried out the new cycle path connecting Cheltenham – Gloucester. And hope it also helps to assess the various risks (number of traffic light junctions, markedunmarked T-junctions, merging onto the road, roundabouts, parts closed due to temp road works, shared and bi-directional paths, width of the lane, proximity to road traffic etc) if going out with kids.

Lions At Large – Pride of Gloucestershire Trail (https://lionsatlarge.co.uk) is a very good activity to do with kids this summer. Costs for the mapappsticker book etc will go towards the charity for ‘The Big Space Cancer Appeal’; raising funds for a new cancer centre in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire that will offer local patients the very best environment for treatment, healing and recovery. We followed the trail using the Lions At Large App which also unlocked some rewards (badge, pencil casecapbottle, sun glasses, toothbrush) that were redeemed from the Gloucester Pop-Up Shop.
