Just wanted to share 2 bikes I was asked to help with
Roommate got a bike off eBay, asked if I could help get it to shift right. Took me like 20min to figure out what was wrong.
-1. There was 2 sets of shifters on the handlebar. The shifter/brakes shifting cable was broken so the previous owner bought another pair of shifters and mounted it (huh).
-2. chain too long since my roommate just installed a full chain from a package (understandable)
-3. Shifting tension and limits needed fixing…. But couldn't get the front derailleur to work.
-4….. Center mount kickstand (despite KSA 40 holes in rear), which was somehow broken off into jagged aluminum, had a bolt which was pushing directly on the front shifting cable. Took it off and readjusted and it worked great.
Next bike, friend had pedals that kept coming off, wanted me to take a look if they could somehow be reattached.
I'm still struggling to understand the failure mode. End looks like both necking from tension?? And then also a fatigued crack? And the middle section looks like something was trying to escape Alien style.
Okay that's all, I'm the bike guy but I rarely get asked to look at bikes so this was interesting for me.
