No you don’t need a spacer for the chainrings you need the front mech set up properly. There are countless online guides of how to do this properly.
Edit: sorry that’s not especially helpful and sounds quite confrontational.
What I was trying to say is that you don’t space the chain rings in an attempt to improve shifting, either it’s an issue with the shifter cable pull/derailleur combination or excessive cable friction, a damaged derailleur or a badly set up derailleur.
